Use Claude or ChatGPT to import and edit WooCommerce products

Connect Claude or ChatGPT to your WooCommerce store with the Product Upload plugin, then ask it to import products from suppliers or change prices, stock, variations and listings, with undo.

Last updated

Update the Product Upload plugin to 1.3.0 or later, confirm an email in the plugin, then add Product Upload as a custom connector in Claude or ChatGPT. Your assistant can import products from supplier sites and edit your WooCommerce products, drafts included: titles, descriptions, tags, categories, attributes, variations, prices, sale prices, stock and images. Every edit can be undone.

Import these eight products from my wholesaler's site.

Queued. Your site picks them up on its next check, usually within five minutes, with your plugin settings applied.

Before you start: plugin version and email

WooCommerce has no outside connection Product Upload could edit through, so the plugin on your site does the work. Editing needs version 1.3.0 or later. Check under Plugins in WordPress; if an update is waiting, update it there.

The plugin connects your site without an email, but an assistant needs you to sign in. Open Product Upload in WordPress, choose Access control from the menu at the top right, and confirm an email under AI assistants. You will get a code by email; type it into the plugin.

Connect your assistant

Add the connector
In Claude: Customize, Connectors, Add, Add custom connector. In ChatGPT: turn on Developer mode under Settings, Apps, then create an app. Paste the address from the AI assistants page.
Sign in with the email you confirmed
Tick your WooCommerce store and choose Read only or Full access.
Try a read first
Ask it to show your draft products. Drafts are only visible to a Full access connection, through the plugin.

Importing into WooCommerce

Imports go into the same queue as the plugin's own import page, and your plugin settings apply: product status, price multiplier and rounding, stock tracking and brands. The plugin picks up new imports on its regular check, usually within about five minutes, and sooner while you have the Product Upload page open in WordPress. Credits are charged when your site confirms the product was created.

  • “Import these eight products from my wholesaler's site.”
  • “Create a product called Linen Apron at $34 with these two photos.”
  • “Which of my imports are still waiting on the store?”

What it can edit

  • Product fields: name, description, slug, status (published, draft or private), tags and categories.
  • Variations: regular and sale price, SKU, weight, stock, stock tracking and backorders, and the variation image.
  • Attributes: rename a value (variations keep their stock and prices), add values, add attributes, add and delete variations.
  • Images: add, delete, reorder and alt text.
  • SEO title and description if Yoast SEO or Rank Math is active, brand if WooCommerce Brands is on, and barcodes on WooCommerce 9.2 or later.

A sale price is handled the way WooCommerce shows it: asking for a compare-at price sets the regular price above the sale price. If something can't be done on your site, the whole edit is refused with the reason before anything changes.

What stays in WordPress

A few things are left for you to change in WordPress:

  • Renaming an attribute itself (its values can be renamed), and reordering attributes.
  • Global attributes shared with other products, which you manage under Products, Attributes.
  • Descriptions that contain an element WordPress would strip on save, such as an embedded video player, script or iframe. The assistant can still change everything else on those products.

Undo and your own changes

Each edit is saved before it is made. Undo puts back what that edit changed, unless you changed the same thing in WordPress since; then your change stays and the assistant tells you. Variations the edit added are removed. Variations it deleted are not re-created, so deleting is something your assistant should ask you about first.

Frequently asked questions

Does it need the plugin to stay installed?
Yes. Reading published products works through your public store, but drafts, edits and imports all go through the plugin.
Why did my assistant say the plugin needs updating?
Editing arrived in plugin 1.3.0. Update the plugin in WordPress and ask again.
Is anything I type sent to WordPress.org?
No. Your assistant talks to Product Upload, which sends signed requests to the plugin on your own site.
