Quick answer
Alibaba vs. AliExpress: which one for you?
Both are owned by Alibaba Group but they solve different problems:
| Alibaba | AliExpress | |
|---|---|---|
| Target buyer | B2B (businesses, resellers) | B2C (consumers) |
| Typical MOQ | 10–1,000 units | 1 unit |
| Per-unit price | 30–70% cheaper | Retail-style |
| Custom packaging / branding | Almost always | Rare |
| Shipping to customer | You handle (3PL or in-house) | Supplier ships direct |
| Best for | Established stores ready for inventory or private-label dropshipping at scale | Dropshipping starters testing products |
Rule of thumb: use AliExpress until a product sells 20+ units a month, then move that specific SKU to Alibaba to cut costs and add branded packaging. See our AliExpress to Shopify guide if you're still at that earlier stage.
Does Alibaba allow dropshipping?
Yes, sort of. Alibaba launched its official Dropshipping Center in 2020 - suppliers flagged as "dropshipping friendly" will accept single-unit orders and ship direct to your customer. The catch: only a subset of suppliers participate, and the selection skews toward commodity products (phone accessories, small electronics, household goods).
For anything branded or semi-custom (private-label skincare, custom packaging, branded apparel), almost no factory will dropship. You need to buy a batch and ship from your own warehouse or 3PL. This is the real model for most 7-figure Shopify stores built on Alibaba.
Three paths to connect Alibaba to Shopify
Path A - Alibaba Dropshipping Center + a fulfillment tool
Closest experience to AliExpress dropshipping. Browse the Alibaba Dropshipping Center tab from inside your Alibaba account, filter to suppliers that offer dropshipping, import the listing to Shopify (via Product Upload or a CSV), and handle order fulfillment by forwarding each order to the supplier via Alibaba's Trade Assurance or directly through the supplier's own portal.
Expect per-unit prices 20–40% below AliExpress on the same product, because you're one hop closer to the factory. Shipping times are similar (10–25 days for standard, 5–10 for premium).
Path B - Sample order → MOQ order → 3PL → Shopify
The serious path. Workflow:
- Find a product on Alibaba.
- Message 3–5 suppliers asking for pricing, MOQ, lead time, and customization options. Expect replies within 24 hours.
- Order one sample from each of your top 2 suppliers ($30–$100).
- Place the MOQ order with the best supplier ($500–$5,000 range typical).
- Ship the inventory to a 3PL (ShipBob, ShipMonk, or a regional warehouse). Get bar-coded SKUs into their system.
- Import the listing to Shopify and fulfill out of the 3PL via ShipStation or Shopify's native fulfillment network.
This is how a "dropshipping" store transitions to a real brand. You have custom packaging, faster shipping, lower per-unit cost, and control over stock.
Path C - Agent model (Yakkyofy, Sourcinbox, a private sourcing agent)
A sourcing agent is a human intermediary who handles the Alibaba/1688/Taobao search, supplier vetting, QC, and sometimes warehousing. You pay a small markup ($0.50–$2/unit) but avoid the communication churn and get faster ship times from their warehouse. At 100+ orders/day, agents are almost always cheaper than DIY.
How to vet an Alibaba supplier in 10 minutes
Alibaba is full of middlemen pretending to be factories. Here's the checklist that filters most of them out:
- Verified Supplier / Gold Supplier badge. "Verified Supplier" means Alibaba (via SGS or Bureau Veritas) actually visited the premises. Gold Supplier alone means the supplier paid the yearly fee - weaker signal.
- Years on Alibaba. 5+ years is a meaningful filter. New accounts are often rebranded trading companies.
- Trade Assurance badge. This is Alibaba's escrow - your money is held until delivery. Do not place orders without it. Ever.
- Factory photos in the supplier profile. Not "our team" photos - actual machinery and production lines. Ask for a live video call to tour the line; a real factory will do it without hesitation.
- Export country mix. The supplier profile shows main export markets. A legit factory usually has spread across 5–10 countries, not 80% to one country.
- Response rate and time. Top-right of the supplier page. Below 80% or > 24h average response = skip.
- Ask for certifications relevant to your product. FDA for food contact, CE for electronics in EU, CPSIA for children's products. A real manufacturer produces these on request.
Do the sample order before you even think about MOQ. A $50 sample beats a $5,000 mistake every time.
MOQ math and when to negotiate samples
Published MOQs on Alibaba are suggestions. Most factories will drop MOQ in half for a first order if you explain you're testing a product on Shopify. Send a message like:
Hi, we're a US-based Shopify store testing [product] for our catalog. Your listing shows MOQ 500 - would you be able to do a trial order of 100 units at the 500-unit price? We'd place a full MOQ order once we validate demand. Can you also share: (1) current lead time, (2) shipping options to [US/EU] and estimated transit, (3) your factory address and business license?
The reply tells you a lot. Real factories answer all three questions with specifics. Trading companies dodge the "factory address" one.
When a smaller MOQ hurts you
Per-unit pricing tiers on Alibaba are steep. A product might be $3.80 at MOQ 100, $2.60 at 500, $1.90 at 1,000. If you're confident in demand, jumping from 100 to 500 often improves landed cost enough to cover a 6–8 week inventory turn, making the bigger order more cash efficient.
Importing the listing data into Shopify
This is the step most "Alibaba to Shopify" guides ignore. Once you've chosen a supplier and placed an order, you still need product pages live on Shopify before the inventory arrives (pre-orders) or on arrival date.
You have three import options:
- Copy-paste manually. Works for 1–5 SKUs. Painful beyond that.
- Ask the supplier for their product CSV/PDF. Most factories have a sales-sheet PDF with specs. Not Shopify-formatted, but it's usable as a reference.
- URL-based import. Paste the Alibaba listing URL into Product Upload and it extracts title, description, spec table, images, and variants. Then rewrite the title and description - Alibaba listings are B2B-speak ("Wholesale high quality custom logo fitness water bottle") and need to be rewritten for consumers.
What you must edit before going live
- Title. Drop "OEM/ODM", "custom logo", and all MOQ language.
- Description. Rewrite into benefit-led consumer copy. Keep the spec table at the bottom - customers love specs.
- Images. Delete the "factory production line" and "our certifications" slides. Keep the white-background product shots and lifestyle photos.
- Variants. Alibaba often lists variants as "1 piece" vs "10 pieces" pricing tiers - those aren't product variants, they're quantity discounts. Filter out before publishing.
Shipping, import duties, and landed cost
"Landed cost" is the number you care about - not the MOQ price. It's the per-unit cost once the inventory is sitting in your US/EU warehouse, ready to ship.
Shipping options from China
| Method | Transit time | Typical cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air Express (DHL/FedEx/UPS) | 3–7 days | $6–$12/kg | Samples and small MOQs under 100 kg |
| Air Freight | 7–14 days (to port + customs) | $4–$7/kg | Medium batches 100–500 kg |
| Sea Freight (LCL) | 30–45 days | $50–$150/cbm | Large batches with room to plan |
| Sea Freight (FCL 20') | 30–45 days | $2,000–$4,000 per container | 5,000+ units with predictable demand |
Import duties and de minimis
The US de minimis threshold (under which no duty is charged) is $800 per shipment as of early 2026 - but it's actively being renegotiated and has been suspended for China-origin shipments several times in recent years. Don't assume zero-duty. Build 10–15% into your landed cost.
The EU killed its €150 de minimis in 2021 and charges VAT from €0. For UK, VAT applies from £0 as well.
Worked landed-cost example
$2.60 MOQ price × 500 units = $1,300 product. Air freight at $5/kg × 50 kg = $250 shipping. 7% duty on $1,300 = $91. Landed cost: $1,641 / 500 = $3.28/unit. Sold at $19.99, gross margin before fees is $16.71 (84%) - which is why serious Shopify stores live on Alibaba, not AliExpress.
